A Wave

India is witnessing an unprecedented wave of public fury and anger towards a cause which I think needs utmost attention. Never before after the Indian Independence, have we seen masses out on the roads protesting in a peaceful manner albeit with steaming fury. It has become too much to bear, the mockery of the Indian politicians, their drama, their lust for money, their utter disregard to the voice of the people.

The Indian Constitution, the lengthiest and the most detailed Constitution in the world begins with the words – “We, the people of India…” The Drafting Committee of the Constitution headed by Baba Saheb Ambedkar was very clear in the manifestation of the power of the Constitution to the people of India. If this is so, why do the Ministers forget who have voted for them and for what cause they are elected? The water has reached the neck in terms of corruption in this country. ‘Something has to be done’, ‘Nothing is going to happen in this country’, ‘Who really cares what happens, I’m least bothered’, these are some of the common phrases used by one and all in this country. We all want something to be done but we are not willing to make an effort to do anything. One man stands up for this cause, and never before seen, he gains momentous support from the common man.

I’m writing this article with one thought in my mind about something which I strongly feel. I’m shocked at the attitude of some people and these are very well educated, intellectual people doing well in their fields of life, ridiculing and criticizing this movement. All I want to say is that when you are not doing anything for this country except by minting money and showing off your intellect and views in the most comprehensive and literary fashion, why do you have a problem when someone is actually wanting and doing something for the future of this country? People have a problem with the manner in which he is trying to dictate and take for ransom the Parliamentary proceedings. To this contention, I would like to state that the Anna Hazare Team is doing no such thing. The 5 member body is representing the voice of millions of Indians and in a case where the Ministers have become deaf and dumb, they have to be reminded of their duties by the people only. What is wrong with the method adopted by Team Anna? Are they rioting, looting or being violent? No, they are carrying on their agitation in a peaceful manner.

The Constitution lays down that India is sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, republic. We are the largest democracy in the world. The fundamental right of a democratic nation is that the common man has a right to criticize the government and vent out his grievance through protests. And when a part of the country is venting out its grievance, why do the other half have a problem? It is this half which sits and writes lovely and mesmerizing articles and never loses an opportunity to show that they are so democratic and neutral. I just want to say if you can’t do anything for this country, don’t sit and criticize and ridicule.
